Factory worker Pham Van Thoai, 28, on Monday forked out Sg$950 ($730) to buy a new iPhone 6 in the Sim Lim Square electronics mall, which has long been known to victimise tourists.

But employees of the "Mobile Air" store refused to allow him to leave with the phone unless he paid an additional Sg$1,500 in "warranty fees". He was eventually given a partial refund of Sg$400, with no phone in hand, after police intervention.

A video widely shared on social media showed Pham kneeling down and begging the shop owner and employees for his full cash payment while they laughed at him.

Singapore media reports said Pham earns the equivalent of $160 a month in Vietnam and had saved up for months to buy the latest iPhone for his girlfriend.

A crowdfunding campaign launched on the Indiegogo portal to buy Pham an iPhone 6 reached $11,000 by midday Thursday, with more than 1,400 donors.

"This is not OK, this is not right. We are NOT a nation of thieves and cheats," wrote Singaporean technology entrepreneur Gabriel Kang, who initiated the campaign a day after the incident.
"While we cannot undo those traumatic and humiliating scenes he has had to endure, we can try to make things right. Let's give the man an iPhone 6!," Kang wrote on the campaign site.

Despite the huge amount collected on his behalf, Pham said he would only accept the amount he had to forfeit at the store.

"I will accept only $550 donated by kind people. Nothing more. I'm grateful for all your kindness but I do not want to take more than what I've lost," he told the Chinese-language Lianhe Zaobao newspaper.

The incident has touched a raw nerve in wealthy, tech-savvy Singapore, which depends heavily on tourism revenues. The city-state of 5.5 million people attracted nearly 16 million tourists in 2013.

The six-storey Sim Lim Square mall has a bad reputation for a small number of rogue retailers who prey on unsuspecting tourists looking to purchase the latest gadgets before returning home.

Another UPDATE:

RECOGNITION OF FORMER STAFF AIR MOBILE PTE LTD Source

I am a former staff who worked in the Mobile Air and I want to divulge this video that was taken a few weeks ago. From this video you can see that Mr. Jover Chew and his partner were trying to cheat tourists from India to intimidate him by saying that he photographed and told him that after the credit card is swiped refund / refund cannot be done. This is actually not true, full refund can be given easily.

I feel really guilty working there. Please keep my identity a secret. I have more information to share.

For you say that the people who work there are gangsters, you really are not wrong. They are gangsters and some of them have a backing which is why I was so scared to share this video. However, I believe that my identity will be kept confidential by the guys at TRS.

You have to think of Sim Lim Square has so many stores, why tourists remain ignorant to remain exposed to deceit in Mobile Air though CASE has incorporated them in the black list on the first floor of Sim Lim Square?

Actually, the tourists are not stupid, they know the fact that the phones sold in Mobile Air is the cheapest. It is actually below the market price and the Mobile Air was also a loss if they sell it to the tourists without deceiving them.

Most tourists actually a smart buyer, they will compare all the prices at Sim Lim Square before coming back to the Mobile Air to buy their products.

When travelers know, they will then take a credit card and they make a payment.
Mobile Water will also ask them to sign a contract that says that they want to include a 1 year warranty.

They would purposely cover the part that says that the warranty an additional $ 1,000 fee for the first year with their fingers and most travelers will just blindly sign it.

After they signed the contract, they immediately cut the $ 1000 + price of the phone from their credit cards and then reveals to them that in order to guarantee an additional $ 1,000 fee.
Most tourists are also not too hard, once they realized that they had been deceived, they will sue for a refund. This is where the gangster tactics they come, they will start to behave like a gangster and becomes aggressive towards customers.

They even lied to the tourists that they would call the police if they continued to ask for a refund. They will also tell them that they are recorded on the camera and then frighten them to go away. I would say 80% of the tourists will just assume they're bad luck and went away.

I have more information to share with you if you all want. Actually, many shops in Sim Lim Square that works like that .. Definitely not all, but probably 20% of all existing stores. There is also an honest business there.

UPDATE:

Jover Chew had a few days did not go home and his wife reported SMRT Ltd (Feedback) to the police .. (act of desperation .. LoL)
